Colour, one of the principles of design considers contrast, proximity, balance and value. Inspiration for colour in design comes from nature, material source or the arrangement of colour schemes.

In furniture design, materiality affects the choice of colour. Furniture is typically made of wood, plastic, metal, fabric and other materials. Would can be left in its natural form and colour, painted or coated. Plastic comes in variety of colours, metal can be painted, coated or natural. he choice of colour depends on the concept of the design. The use of fabrics opens up to more diversity of colour, pattern and texture.

Colour can transform an object dependant on the choice so is an integral part of design.
