Material

Materiality can serve as the defining principle of an object in furniture design or can be used for the functional & essential characteristics for the functionality and aesthetics of the design.

Materials are selected for their inherent qualities, raw or natural characteristics or their suitability to be manipulated to the function or purpose. These characteristics could be attributed to strength, weight, texture, opacity or aesthetic desirability suitable to the finish of the design.

The exploration of materials for designers serves as an opportunity to research and develop concepts, innovate and the  serves as the basis of the outcome. Through an experimental process materials can be manipulated to different shapes and forms. The exploration of materiality is an integral part of design.
